086 Rabbits
The rabbit project teaches members to select, produce and care for rabbits used for show or meat production. At the same time members learn the responsibility of caring for a living thing.
Focus:
- Selection, production, management and health of rabbits
- Financing and purchasing rabbits and marketing breeding animals and fryers
- Live animal evaluation
- Establishing a breeding herd and maintaining production records
What the member can do: (Beginner level)
- Identify breeds of rabbits
- Identify parts of the rabbit
- Care for and exhibit rabbits
- Present illustrated talks and demonstrations on rabbit topics
What the member can do: (Intermediate & Advanced levels)
- Select and develop does for the breeding herd
- Breed does and raise young
- Maintain financial records and evaluate profit or loss
- Develop disease/parasite control and prevention programs
- Keep hutch records and financial records and use them in management decisions
- Establish a market for breeding animals and fryers
- Serve as a teen leader and teach younger members
