060 Poultry
In the poultry project, members are taught the evaluation, selection, production, management and the health of poultry.
Focus:
- Selection, production, management and health of poultry
- Financing and purchasing chicks and marketing broilers and eggs
- Evaluating live poultry, dressed market birds and eggs
- Establishing flocks and maintaining production records
- Exploring career opportunities in the poultry industry
What members can do: (Beginner level)
- Identify breeds of poultry
- Identify parts of the hen
- Care for chicks during the brooding period
- Exhibit live and dressed market birds
- Present illustrated presentations and talks on poultry topics
What members can do: (Intermediate level)
- Become familiar with live poultry standards of perfection, dressed market poultry grades and egg grades
- Keep financial records and evaluate profit or loss
- Develop flock health program and sanitation guidelines
- Promote poultry products through demonstrations
- Participate in chick embryo project and/or hatch eggs with own incubator
What members can do: (Advanced level)
- Establish a layer flock / expand a broiler operation
- Establish markets for broilers and eggs
- Maintain production and financial records and use them in management decisions
- Serve as a teen leader and teach younger members
- Explore career opportunities in the poultry industry
