020 Dairy
The dairy project teaches the selection, production, management, and health of dairy cattle.
Focus:
- Selection, production, management, and health of dairy cattle
- Financing and purchasing dairy heifers and marketing milk
- Live animal evaluation and dairy cattle judging
- Establishing a producing herd and maintaining production records
- Exploring career opportunities in the dairy industry
What members can do: (Beginner level)
- Identify breeds of dairy cattle
- Identify major parts of the dairy cow
- Care for and exhibit a dairy heifer
- Develop basic skills in judging dairy cattle
- Present illustrated talks and demonstrations on dairy topics
What members can do: (Intermediate level)
- Select and develop heifers for a producing herd
- Keep financial records and evaluate profit or loss
- Develop a good herd health program
- Promote dairy products through demonstrations
What members can do: (Advanced level)
- Establish and mange a production herd
- Establish sanitation guidelines
- Utilize DHIA data in management decisions
- Serve as a teen leader and teach younger members
- Explore career opportunities in the dairy industry
