020 Dairy

The dairy project teaches the selection, production, management, and health of dairy cattle.


Focus:

  • Selection, production, management, and health of dairy cattle
  • Financing and purchasing dairy heifers and marketing milk
  • Live animal evaluation and dairy cattle judging
  • Establishing a producing herd and maintaining production records
  • Exploring career opportunities in the dairy industry

What members can do: (Beginner level)

  • Identify breeds of dairy cattle
  • Identify major parts of the dairy cow
  • Care for and exhibit a dairy heifer
  • Develop basic skills in judging dairy cattle
  • Present illustrated talks and demonstrations on dairy topics

What members can do: (Intermediate level)

  • Select and develop heifers for a producing herd
  • Keep financial records and evaluate profit or loss
  • Develop a good herd health program
  • Promote dairy products through demonstrations

What members can do: (Advanced level)

  • Establish and mange a production herd
  • Establish sanitation guidelines
  • Utilize DHIA data in management decisions
  • Serve as a teen leader and teach younger members
  • Explore career opportunities in the dairy industry
