Glossary of Terms (as used in the lessons)

U is for . . .

U-pick A farming operation in which the customer picks his or her own fruit, vegetables or other food.
udder The bag containing the mammary glands of a domestic animal.
unbleached Not bleached.
underground water supply Fresh water from aquifers running underground which can provide water to wells.
understory The layer of decomposed and decomposing leaves of the forest floor.
Universal Product Codes (UPC) A bar code that appears on products that can be scanned by a store clerk so the store's computer can select the appropriate price and description from its memory bank and print the information on the receipt.
unsaturated fat Fats commonly found in vegetable and plant sources, usually liquid at room temperature.
US Department of Agriculture Federal agency involved in all phases of agriculture.
US Environmental Protection Agency An independent agency in the executive branch of the US government established to monitor environmental quality and control pollution caused by solid wastes, pesticides, toxic substances, noise, and radiation.
US Food and Drug Administration A federal agency that oversees the safety of foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
US RDA (Recommended Daily Allowances) The daily amount of each nutrient recommended for most people.
