Glossary of Terms (as used in the lessons)

T is for . . .

tagging Loose, granular, gritty particles of worn or disintegrated rock that is finer than gravel and coarser than dust.
tame Bring from wildness into a controlled state.
taproot The main root of a plant, growing straight downward from the stem.
tattoo A permanent mark or design make on the skin by a process of pricking an ingraining an indelible pigment or by raising scars.
technology The application of science, especially to industrial or commercial objectives.
temperature The degree of hotness or coldness of a body or the environment.
terrace Ridges of soil built across the slope to slow the runoff of water.
textile Fiber or yarn for weaving or knitting into fabric.
texture A grainy, fibrous, woven or dimensional quality, as opposed to a uniformly flat, smooth surface.
thallophytic plant A plant-like organism of the division which includes algae, fungi and bacteria.
thiamin A B-complex vitamin, produced synthetically and occurring naturally in the bran coat of grains, in yeast and in meat, that is necessary for carbohydrate metabolism, maintenance of normal neural activity, and in the prevention of beriberi.
thresh To beat the stems and husks of grain or cereal plants with a machine to separate the grains and seeds.
threshing machine A farm machine used in threshing out grain or seed plants.
tillage practices Practices used for cultivating land.
tillers An erect shoot arising from the crown of a grass.
tilth Cultivation of land; tillage.
timber Stands of trees in a forest.
tissue An aggregation of morphologically similar cells and associated intercellular matter acting together to perform one or more specific functions in the body.
tofu Soybean curd.
tolerance The permissable deviation from a specified value.
tomatl The Nahuatl word for "tomato."
tomato A plant native to South America, widely cultivated for its edible, fleshy, usually red fruit.
topsoil The surface layer of soil.
tractor A vehicle, powered by gasoline or a diesel motor, having large, heavily treaded tires, and used in farming for pulling machinery.
trade The business of buying and selling commodities; commerce.
tradition A mode of thought or behavior followed by a people continuously from generation to generation.
transmit To send from one person, thing, and or plant to another.
transplant To transfer from one place to another; to uproot and replant a growing plant.
troposphere The lowest region of the atmosphere between the earth's surface and the tropopause, characterized by decreasing temperature with increasing altitude.
truck A vehicle that has many uses on the farm. Refrigerated milk trucks carry milk from the dairy farm to the processing plant. Trucks also carry the milk and other farm products to the grocery store. Farmers and ranchers use trucks to carry feed and cattle from place to place. The trucks also help the farmer carry feed from town and cattle to town.
trunk The main wood axis of a tree.
tuber A plant with thick, swollen branches that grow underground. A potato is a tuber.
twig A small branch or slender shoot, as of a tree or shrub.
